Ridgewood

Ridgewood is a NY neighborhood bordered to the north by Maspeth; to the east by Middle Village; to the southeast by Glendale; to the southwest by Bushwick; and the west by East Williamsburg. There are a couple of disputes regarding Ridgewood’s etymology; apparently, it could refer to a road, the local geography, or the Ridgewood Reservoir.

Ridgewood’s history dates back to the early 17th century when British settlers moved here. In that same era, Dutch settlers moved to the nearby Bushwick neighborhood. Being positioned adjacent to each other, there were numerous conflicts and disputes, more so when it came to the regions’ boundaries. This border was later to become the boundary between Brooklyn and Queens.

While Bushwick developed rapidly during the 19th century, Ridgewood remained slow to develop and sparsely populated.  However, this changed during the onset of the 20th century as a result of an influx in the number of German immigrants to the region. As the Germans’ population increased, there was a need to build houses where they could settle. This saw an increase in the number of row houses that were erected. Ridgewood continued to grow, and by the time it was getting to the mid-20th century, Ridgewood had emerged as a well-established, ethnically diverse community.

Most of the homes in Ridgewood are brick and stone homes if not converted warehouses. It is a neighborhood that attracts both tourists and potential homeowners. The neighborhood is conveniently located near major NY neighborhoods, giving locals easy access to nearby NY neighborhoods.

If you are the kind of person who has a preference for Queens over Brooklyn, then Ridgewood is an ideal place for settling. This neighborhood is characterized by music venues, local breweries, converted lofts, dive bars, family-oriented vibes, hipster energy, and old-school charm. Locals can shop at venues such as Wyckoff Avenue and Fresh Pond Road. Ridgewood also flaunts fine dining eateries as well as niche pubs. This is indeed the neighborhood you should seek if you are looking for accessibility, energy, and style. While Ridgewood is somewhat small in size, it is one of those neighborhoods in New York that are developing at an alarming rate.
