‘Lucky’ Friday, August 13 1982 saw Dave and his wife Sherry Gold open the first 99Cents Only shop in LA. To celebrate this incredible milestone, they decided to sell all TV sets in the store for only 99 cents to the first 9 customers who walked in the store. Over 300 people showed up, queuing outside the store as they waited for it to open. This huge queue piqued the interest of big media houses; over 10 TV outlets were ready to cover the store’s first day of operation. The success that followed the store’s grand opening inspired a tradition that still holds water to date. 99-Cents Only secured its place as a legendary American store when Andreas Gursky, a famous German photographer captured a globally-acknowledged photo of 99 Cent’s inside in 1999 in Hollywood.
