Annadale Playground

Annadale Playground is a superb go-to outdoor venue, especially if you have young kids. Being next to a school, the playground can get pretty crowded, especially when the weather is all warm and nice. If you want to spend some quality time here, it is best to visit during the morning hours. The playground has separate areas for young children and their older counterparts, so you need not worry about your toddler’s safety. Annadale Playground has swings, slides, wide-area running spaces, jungle gyms, and so more to keep your ‘youngies’ well occupied and entertained. The swings come fitted with rubber mats for extra safety, and they are well fenced-off to ensure that children don’t hurt themselves by running right in front of them.

As local stories would have it, the Annadale region was named for Anna, the wife of a renowned and popular shipbuilder from who hailed from here. While there is not much evidence to prove how true this lore is, the playground still bears homage to this tale. Annadale Park is found within the neighborhood of Rego Park. before being developed into the residential hub it is today, Rego Park was mainly farmland whose previous owners were Chinese immigrants and their generations.

Following major developments of the area, the city of New York acquired a parcel of land to construct the playground in 1914 by way of condemnation. Parks did not have jurisdiction rights until 1951 when this changed. Ever since its establishment, Annadale Park has enjoyed joint operation. This is in accordance with an agreement made between the city and the Board of Education. Initially, the park went by the name P.S. 175 Playground, mostly because of the school that lies adjacent to it. In 1985, the Park changed its name to Annadale Playground under the directive of Commissioner Stem.

In 2000, plans were made to renovate the playground, and Mayor Giuliani sponsored the project with $60,000. Some of the improvements made included: paving the entire playground, miscellaneous site repairs, and additional playing equipment. Some playground features here include: basketball courts, spray shower, swings, handball courts, and chess tables. The playground is a lovely space that welcomes people of all ages to let out their inner child. If you are in search of a place to wind off as you get away from all the hustle and bustle of city life, then Annadale Playground in Rego Park awaits you.

Chabad of Rego Park

The Chabad of Rego Park, Queens, NY, was founded by Rabbi Shulamis Blokh and Rabbi Eli in 1997. These two Rabbis established this place to serve as a branch of the largest Jewish educational and outreach organization, Chabad-Lubavitch. Chabad-Lubavitch is a dynamic and vibrant force in Jewish life. The organization’s programs have over the years touched the lives of millions of folks, and have had a direct or indirect impact on the lives of Jews. Chabad-Lubavitch is more than a movement; it is an organization and a philosophy that is considered the most dynamic force within the Jewish lifestyle in modern times.

The term ‘Chabad’ is an acronym of Hebrew origin that defines the three intellectual faculties within the Jewish tradition. These faculties include wisdom (chochmah), comprehension (binah), and knowledge (da’at). The movement follows the deepest dimension of God’s Torah, a philosophy that teaches the purpose and role of God’s creation. It also emphasizes each creature’s importance and its mission here on earth. Lastly, the doctrines applied here teach a unique recognition and understanding of the creator. Through the philosophy taught by the Chabad, every human being is encouraged to govern and refine his or her feelings and actions through the three guiding principles; knowledge, comprehension, and wisdom.

Lubavitch’, on the other hand, is a term that refers to the name given to the town in White Russia where the Chabad movement originated. As a matter of fact, this movement was based here for over a hundred years. ‘Lubavitch’ translates directly to ‘the city of brotherly love’; it captures the essence of the love and responsibility created by the Chabad philosophy when it comes to the lifestyle of all Jews.

The history of present-day’s Chabad Lubavitch movement dates back to the 1940’s when Rabbi Yosef Yitzchak Schneersohn, the 6th Lubavitcher Rebbe, appointed Rabbi Menachem Mendel, his son-in-law (future successor) to take leadership of the newly-founded social service and educational arm of the movement. Rabbi Yosef was motivated and driven by his deep and true love for all Jews. His self-sacrifice and boundless optimism spurred him to set into motion a wide array of services, programs, and institutions aimed at serving Jews.

Today, there are more than 5,000 emissary societies (operating full-time) that apply 250-year-old doctrines and principles. The philosophy taught at Chabad organizations directs over 3,500 institutions. The workforce here dances to the tune of tens of thousands when it comes to the number of employees. The main objective of Chabad of Rego is to reach out to as many individuals of Jewish descent as possible, particularly in the Rego Park area of Queens. The organization targets all Jews regardless of background, age, affiliation, or gender. The organization achieves this through an array of classes, programs, and community events.

Flushing Meadows

Also known as Flushing Meadows Park, Flushing Meadows is a public outdoor space found in QueensRego Park, NY. The park is bounded by Van Wyck Expressway (I-678) to the east, Flushing Bay to the north, Grand Central Parkway to the west, and Union Turnpike to the south. Flushing Meadows is the 4th largest public park in NYC, with a total area of 363 ha.

Flushing Meadows is the site of two 20th Century World Fairs, and it continues drawing and delighting guests up to date. When you get to the park, you will be treated to scenic trails, historic walks, an array of sporting events, and a plethora of other fun activities. The games you can enjoy while you are here include: tennis, soccer, volleyball, baseball, cricket, and more. There is a fantastic recreation center where you can work out with your friends and family members. To explore the Flushing Meadows’ trails and lakes, you can choose to bike, walk, or even take a kayak. If you are a history buff, be sure to spend some quality time at the park’s several civic and cultural institutions.

Up until the 19th century, the site where Flushing Meadows sits consisted of rich wetlands that straddled the Flushing River from north to south. At the start of the 20th century, this site was used as a dumping ground for ashes. This is because the area was quite distant from the developed areas of NYC, and thus was considered invaluable.

As it was getting into the early 1920’s, Robert Moses, the then commissioner, came up with the idea of establishing a large park in the region. The original idea was for the park to be part of a system of parks that ran across the eastern part of Queens. In 1939 and 1964, the site was chosen to host the New York World’s Fair. After hosting the second Fair, the part somewhat fell apart and got into such a desolate state. However, between the late 1990’s and early 2000’s, Flushing Meadows underwent a series of renovations to maintain its original state.

Flushing Meadows Park is owned and maintained by the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation (alias NYC Parks). Additional support, funds, and services are provided to the Park by the Flushing Meadows Park Conservancy as well as the Alliance for Flushing Meadows. The Park lies on the eastern edge of the region enclosed by the Queens Community Board.

Rego Park 99 cents Market’s history dates back to the early 1960’s when Dave Gold, the company’s founding father, inherited a small liquor store in Los Angeles’ downtown area. He came up with a brilliant idea; selling wine bottles at a fixed price (99 cents)! His test became an instant success story. Following this success, Dave decided to test the waters even further; he decided to sell everything else at the store for the exact same price, hoping that this move would make his store even more popular.

‘Lucky’ Friday, August 13 1982 saw Dave and his wife Sherry Gold open the first 99Cents Only shop in LA. To celebrate this incredible milestone, they decided to sell all TV sets in the store for only 99 cents to the first 9 customers who walk in the store. Over 300 people showed up, queuing outside the store as they waited for it to open. This huge queue piqued the interest of big media houses; over 10 TV outlets were ready to cover the store’s first day of operation. The success that followed the store’s grand opening inspired a tradition that still holds water to date. Every now and then, the store has irresistible 99-cent deals for TVs, apparel, household items, and more merchandise.

99-Cents Only secured its place as a legendary American store when Andreas Gursky, a famous German photographer captured a globally-acknowledged photo of 99 Cent’s inside in 1999 in Hollywood. This picture was so famous, that it even featured at the Museum of Modern Art in NYC. It was later auctioned off for over $3M, setting an all-time selling price record for a photo.
